Helping Children Understand the Season of Lent

Last night we began the Season of Lent with Ash Wednesday. We had a beautiful service in the sanctuary, which several of our children and youth helped with by asking Dr. Alderman questions about the traditions of Ash Wednesday.

Helping children understand the season of Lent can be rather difficult because of the concept of sin and repentance and the explanation of a necessary death and resurrection of Christ. However, there are many ways that you can help your child understand the meaning and purpose of Lent by helping them with spiritual disciplines.
You can explain to children how Lent is a time for us to eliminate the distractions that keep us from thinking and behaving in ways that God loves to see.

This coming Sunday, February 17, in Sunday school, children are going to receive calendars that date from Ash Wendesday to Easter Sunday (the season of Lent). They will be encouraged to fill (by coloring a picture, writing a phrase/word, etc.) each day with something special they are going to pray for that day to help them better the relationships with those around them and ultimately their love of God. I hope you will encourage your children to keep up with this at home as their spiritual discipline throughout the Lenten Season, leading up to the celebration of Christs Resurrection on Easter morning.

Also, the following is a link to another children's ministry blog about children and worship. I strongly encourage you to visit this blog for more information on children and Lent.

2013 Family Mission Trip!

Family mission trips provide a time for families with children of all ages to reap the rewards of serving others. This year, two separate mission groups will go to St. Simons Island in Georgia; April 1-5 (Fulton County Spring Break) and April 8-12 (Cobb County Spring Break). Projects include sorting clothes, making meals, building reefs out of oyster shells, and small construction jobs.

The cost for adults (12 years and up) is $270 and $235 per child ages 2-11.
A $200 deposit reserves a spot for your family.

For further information contact Lyndsay Slocum.

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; just as I have loved you; you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciple, if you have love for one another.
John 13:34-35

We have been commissioned to serve on another! The impact that mission and serving makes on a child's life is ever-lasting!

Lunch with the Pastors!

This past Sunday all of our pastors had the special opportunity to have lunch with our amazing 4th and 5th graders! The kids and pastors enjoyed pizza together as well as some cookie cake decorating (the task was to make the cakes look like the pastor at their table), and then the kids got to ask the pastors all of the questions they have been dying to know the answers to; such as,

"When did you receive your first Bible?”
“"Which Bible do you use while preaching?"
"What is your favorite Bible story?"
"What is the worst thing you did as a child?"
"What are your hobbies?"

Everyone had a great time and both pastors and children were thrilled at the opportunity to spend an afternoon together!
