Family Journey Through Lent: Journey Stop Week 4

Family Journey through Lent
Lent is a time of reflection and prayer as we remember Jesus last days on Earth. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and ends with the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus on Easter. During this time of Lent, families can journey together through a time a prayer and reflection. This is such a special time because it is a time we step back and reflect on what is really important in our lives. Each week through this Lenten season, I will post an activity that you can do with your family that will help create a space for prayer together and time to reflect on the love and sacrifice of Jesus for each of us.  As a family, I hope that this reflection time allows you to grow closer to one another and most of all to Jesus.

Journey Stop Week Four

      Hospitality

An important time for Jesus was time spent having a meal with friends around the table. Make a special meal and invite friends or other family members over to enjoy it with your family. Here are some questions you can ask everyone around the table.

Table Talk Questions
1. If you could invite anyone to dinner that is ALIVE who would it be? Why?         2. What was your favorite part of today? Why?
3. If you could any talent in the world, what would it be?                            4. If you could travel to any place in the world, where would you go?

Journey Stop Week Three

Prayer Pretzels

A long time ago, children were taught to pray by crossing their arms. There is a legend that a monk made decided to use leftover dough to make pretzels during Lent that looked like children crossing their arms. He gave them to children as they were learning their prayers and also to remind them to pray during this important holy time. So, when you see a pretzel, you can be reminded to pray. Below is a recipe for you to make your own homemade pretzels, but depending on time you can always buy premade crescent roll dough and form them into a pretzel shape, and if youre really low on extra time this week, you can just buy a bag of pretzels and say a prayer!

Pretzel Recipe

What You'll Need:
1 pkg. yeast
3/4 cup warm water
1 tablespoon sugar
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
Coarse salt

What to Do:
Preheat the oven to 400° F.
Line a cookie sheet with foil and spray with vegetable oil.
Sprinkle a package of yeast onto ¾ cup of warm water. Add a tablespoon of sugar, and stir. Let stand until mixture foams.
Put two cups of flour and ½ teaspoon of salt into a bowl. Add the yeast mixture and stir.
Sprinkle flour on the counter and knead the dough until it is smooth.
Roll pieces of dough into ropes and make fun-shaped or traditional pretzels.
Lay pretzels on the foil-lined cookie sheet.
Beat an egg with a fork.
Brush pretzels with the egg wash and sprinkle with coarse salt.
Bake pretzels for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool on a rack

Journey Stop Week Two

Loving Others
Sometimes we get caught up in our own needs and wants and neglect to love and care for others. As a family, think of someone in your life who may need to know they are loved and cared for this week. Maybe there is someone who is sick or going through a hard time. As a family make a card for this person and send or deliver it. Before you send it or deliver it, say a prayer for the person. If possible, take time to call or visit with them.

Journey Stop Week One

Reflection on Blessings

As a family, find an empty jar and decorate it however you would like (stickers, ribbon, paint etc.).  Label the jar Blessings. Have someone cut up small pieces of paper and put them next to the jar. Each day during the week, each family member should write or draw something good that happened during the day or a blessing they are thankful for that day. At the end of the week, take the pieces out of the jar and share them as a family. Be reminded that God is at work in our lives every day. Say a prayer together to thank God.
